3 Terror-free Steps to Your Perfect Fit

Pop quiz: What’s your most dreaded shopping trip?
Answer: Swimsuit shopping. (I’m betting you got this one on the first try.)
It’s that time of year again, and the stores are packed with rack upon rack of itty bitty bathing suits. They are fashionably fabulous—or maybe that has something to do with the tan, smooth, flat-bellied 25-year-old models wearing them in the ads.
What’s a modest, practical, over-40 woman of average proportions to do?
I’d like to suggest that looking and feeling your best in vacation season is not about the suit. It’s not about the designers who offer high fashion…only in size 2. It’s not about knowing what cut flatters your body type.
Living your best life has precious little to do with fitting rooms. This season’s runway favorite may be cute, but the latest styles are just window dressing. What truly adds up to the good life comes from much deeper.
You have what it takes to stand out as a beautiful, worthy individual, whether poolside, seaside, or in the routine of everyday life. But perhaps, like many women, you’ve been hiding under unflattering layers of uncertainty and fear.
Style Secret 1: Find your confidence—and wear it boldly.
Let’s face it: Most of us don’t look like a million bucks in a bikini. But is there really any reason we should?
Of course not. The images that sell warm-weather style are just that, images. They’re fleeting, unrealistic, the stuff of fantasy—not to mention full-body cosmetics, clever lighting, and even airbrushing.
You’re a real woman, not an imaginary one. Real women live in a world of concerns and challenges. But the abilities and gifts you bring to the table are powerful, and you’re able to conquer life every day even without the help of special effects.
Real women have many facets and interests beyond appearance. We’re professionals who take pride in our work. We’re valuable employees, or savvy bosses. We’re caring friends, spouses, co-workers, or neighbors. We’re mothers or daughters, or both. We’re curious, adventurous, welcoming, intuitive, studious, athletic, generous, artistic, determined, funny, sensitive… Whatever your brightest qualities are, let them shine with self-assurance. You deserve no less.
Maybe a skimpy suit just isn’t enough to contain or showcase the entire richness that is you!
Style Secret 2: No one else can dictate what belongs on your palette.
“Radiant orchid” topped Pantone’s latest fashion color list. The purplish shade appears in more places than ever before—but not my friend’s closet. She makes no apologies when she says that orchid just doesn’t work for her. Bright turquoise, though, makes her feel good, and when she feels good, she’s a brilliant, stunning woman.
Turquoise tops my friend’s list every year.
Now take that wisdom beyond the world of fashion. Too many times, women suppress what they want, need, or know is best for them because someone—often, an expert or other outsider who doesn’t know her—has suggested a different direction.
There are certainly times when you should reach out for help, but don’t assume that the guidance of others trumps all else, all the time. If you have a good plan that’s helping you move toward achieving your goals, you have the right to speak up for it—and for yourself. Your intuition and experience have great value.
Style Secret 3: Strut your experience and your season of life.
Yes, the vibrant faces and flaw-free figures you see modeling swimsuits are amazing. But even if you don’t share their physical qualities, you have another kind of “amazing,” I guarantee—one that can’t be captured in photos.
You have a history all your own. Your life experience is entirely unique. You have close connections that you’ve tended and nurtured, and they’ve grown stronger with the passage of time. You have knowledge that, every single day, is a little deeper and richer than it was the day before.
I’ve spoken previously about the importance of “honoring where you are.” That principle applies to your attitude and self-perception as much as it does your physical wellness. Wherever you are now in life’s journey, one thing is sure: The only direction to go is forward. Zero benefit lies in looking back—but infinite possibility still remains ahead for every one of us. Growth, joy, and discovery are yours for the taking in every phase of life.
Own your true style. You deserve no less. With a forward-thinking mindset and an honest understanding of who you really are, you will shine. It’s not the spectacular suit but the one of a kind, assured, vital woman under the fashion that really makes a splash, whether poolside, seaside, or most importantly, in everyday life.
