“My religion is love.”
Amma, “The Hugging Saint” (She’s hugged more than 30 million people!)
It's difficult in our modern culture to imagine giving one's self over so completely to Love. To make Love itself the singular motivation for everything you do. Some of folks touch on it, dedicating themselves to their families, living lives of service. But usually, most of us have complicated lives that don't allow us to act solely out of Love, right?
Nope. That's not really true. That's really short-selling the power and practicality of our deepest [re]source as a way to live.
At any and every moment, we have a simple choice between two directions in our
lives – towards some form of gratification, or towards Love, compassion, and the
path that choosing Love creates for us. We make this choice in every aspect of our
lives, from the smallest decisions – like what to watch on TV, or what to snack on;
to the biggest – like how to raise your kids, or who to vote for.
As crazy as it may sound, if you rely completely on Love when seeking direction,
your intuitive intelligence will arise and direct you as clearly as if a wise advisor
were whispering in your ear. Naturally, fluidly, you'll begin to lose any negativity.
You’ll start getting ideas for how to improve things around you. Selfish decisions
become harder and harder to follow. Your open-heartedness will allow you to
intuitively know what to do in tough situations.
You will become a link in a chain of Love, and experience the sanity, strength, unity,
and freedom that comes from making compassionately informed decisions, and
from acting ethically.
"We are all beads strung together on the same chain of love.
Could it really be so simple that just the effort to keep Love in your heart as your
life’s focus can connect you, guide you, and provide for you? Well, you won’t know
for sure, unless you make that choice for faith over fear, and try it. Then watch what
happens. It's not the secret to getting what you want, really, it’s no secret at all. It’s
a powerfully deep kind of common sense, and the best free life coach you could
Poo-pooing these beliefs as naîve, unrealistic, pie-in-the-sky fairy tales is the
attitude that has created every disastrous condition ever known. Embracing them –
“taking them to heart”– can create the healing that our world so desperately needs.
Amma puts it this way:
"In the end, love is the only medicine that can heal the wounds of the
world. In this universe, it is love that binds everything together. As this
awareness dawns within us, all disharmony will cease."
Now, if at all possible, go see Amma and get your hug.
